Our West Sussex Waste Prevention advisors are passionate about preventing and reducing waste and from all walks of life.

Committing to e-learning training on-line and to spreading the waste prevention/reduction message in their local communities, you may have met them out and about giving talks on recycling, manning recycling road show stands and chatting to members of the general public at festivals, shows and fairs.

The volunteer Waste Prevention Advisor scheme began in 2007, each year offering West Sussex householders the opportunity to qualify and join the team. Each volunteer must complete the training package – all done in your own time - which has been devised by the University of Brighton. The response has been overwhelming and the scheme has gone from strength to strength, attracting enthusiastic and willing volunteers.

Training, recently updated and still through the University of Brighton, is now available on-line offering maximum flexibility as an e-learning package alongside the offer of some site visits and face-to-face sessions.

What some of our volunteers have to say

Alcira from Worthing: “I signed up to the course because I was curious about current affairs…and an issue that can benefit the community.”

Ron from Lancing: “I have enjoyed going out to various events and talking to people, there is a great deal of interest and giving simple advice is a satisfying way to do something for the environment. There is the added benefit of meeting up with a fine group of fellow volunteers and that social aspect has been very enjoyable.”

Laura from Burgess Hill: “I had not previously thought about what happened after my rubbish bags were collected by the bin men – now I’ve learnt a lot about waste streams, recycling and how a small change can make a big difference.”

What do our volunteers do?

Dedicating time and energy our volunteers are out and about in local communities offering help and advice to support our householders in their efforts to prevent and reduce waste – you may have met some of them at local events.

Some of our volunteers use their skills to help run the Waste Prevention Advisor Steering Group or to showcase ‘art from waste’. Others have come up with activities and games for scout and cub groups; some offer home composting advice; and one has even written a recycling song! The skills they bring to the volunteer role are invaluable.

Our volunteer chair of the Steering Group, Cheryl says:

“In the past twelve months the Waste Prevention Scheme has gone from strength to strength, supported by a hardworking and dedicated volunteer and staff team. In June, I volunteered to be Chair of the Steering Group meetings, encouraged and supported by the staff team, for which I am really grateful. Together we have helped to support local people to increase recycling participation and reduce waste by increasing awareness of the waste prevention throughout West Sussex.”
