Sew in spring for a summer splash.

If your winter kitchen scraps have already broken down into some crumbly compost, grab a spade, dig some out, and get yourself some of the following seed packets the next time you're passing a garden centre.

These hardy annuals are all perfect to plant now; producing splashes of colour mid-late summer.

Marigolds (Calendula officinalis)
Slightly aromatic leaves and single or double daisy-like flowers in shades of orange or yellow flowers from summer to autumn. Height 45-60cm.

Chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum carinatum)
Tricoloured daisy flowers. Height 45-75cm.

Baby's Breath (Gypsophila elegans)
Clusters of numerous tiny white or pink flowers on slender stalks in summer. Height 45-60cm.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)
Classically yellow with a black centre but also in lemon, reds and browns. Height 60cm-3m.

Night-scented stocks (Matthiola incana)
Highly perfumed pink or white flowers in spikes. Height 15-30cm.

Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus)
Sprawling or climbing easy-to-grow annual with yellow, orange or red edible flowers. Height 30cm-1.2m.

Oranges, yellows, pinks and reds - such a cheery sight to see a bright, blooming border brimming with colour in the summer sun. Happy seed-sowing.
