Sew in spring for a summer splash.
If your winter kitchen scraps have already broken down into some crumbly compost, grab a spade, dig some out, and get yourself some of the following seed packets the next time you're passing a garden centre.
These hardy annuals are all perfect to plant now; producing splashes of colour mid-late summer.
Marigolds (Calendula officinalis)

Chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum carinatum)
Tricoloured daisy flowers. Height 45-75cm.
Baby's Breath (Gypsophila elegans)
Clusters of numerous tiny white or pink flowers on slender stalks in summer. Height 45-60cm.
