Easy way to get rid of fruit flies
If you have been adding fruit and vegetable peelings to your compost lately, you may be seeing a cloud of fruit flies each time you remove the lid. But you don't have to put up with them - and importantly, don't stop composting your fruit and vegetable remains.
The flies are tiny and white or brown in colour, no more than 2mm in length. They love fruit and they tend to grow in number in the summer.
Don't want them? I don't blame you. They are part of the natural composting process, feeding on the fruit acids in your bin, but to remove them just cover the top layer of fruit and vegetable waste with a thin layer of soil or compost. They should disappear within a couple of days.
